Voidryte
Material/Element in The World of Calderaas by Stephen Lucas Lacroix
Overview
Voidryte is a naturally occurring mineral found exclusively within the geology of Calderaas. It is the foundational resource upon which all aerial civilization is built — responsible for both the floating of landmasses and the technology that allows airships and aerocrafts to achieve flight. Its appearance is immediately distinctive and unlike any other mineral in Calderaas: externally, it presents as faded violet crystal resembling raw amethyst. Internally, the crystal contains what appears to be a living galaxy — swirling light, pinpoints like trapped stars, constant slow movement visible through the crystal face. It does not glow outward aggressively. Looking into a Voidryte crystal is like looking through a window into something vast and contained.
Physical Properties
Appearance: Large, faded violet crystalline formations externally resembling raw amethyst. The interior contains a perpetually moving galaxy-like phenomenon — swirling light and pinpoints resembling trapped stars visible through the crystal face. No two Voidryte crystals display identical internal patterns.
Growth: Voidrytes are not a static resource. At active volcanic sites, deposits continue to grow indefinitely, fed by the concentrated energy in the crystal heart beneath the earth. Mined crystals removed from their source do not continue to grow.
Scale: Crystal size directly correlates to field strength and projection range. Larger crystals generate stronger, wider anti-gravity fields. Smaller crystals generate weaker, more contained fields.
The Anti-Gravity Field
The defining property of voidrytes is their natural emission of an anti-gravity field. This field exists passively in any exposed or energized voidryte — it is not created by external input but is an intrinsic property of the mineral itself.
Field behavior:
Uncontrolled in raw or exposed crystals — radiates outward passively in all directions
Can be regulated and directed through Lighcryte input, making it usable for practical lift applications
Scales with crystal size — larger crystals project stronger and wider fields
Contained naturally by ground and earth — crystals embedded in rock and soil do not project their field upward through the earth above them
Void Flux
The anti-gravity field emitted by exposed or energized voidrytes carries a secondary effect known as Void Flux. Void Flux is not the field itself but a property of it — present wherever the field radiates and scaling with field intensity.
Effects of unshielded Void Flux exposure:
Violet eyes — progressive permanent color shift to vibrant violet. The baseline and most visible marker of cumulative exposure. Recognized throughout Calderaas society.
Body weakness — debilitating physical deterioration in individuals not conditioned from a young age. Adult bodies cannot adapt to unshielded exposure. Only gradual conditioning begun in childhood builds the necessary tolerance.
Sterility — unavoidable consequence of cumulative exposure. Cannot be mitigated by partial shielding.
Shielding: Full shielding fully protects against all three effects — no exceptions. Void Flux does not penetrate adequate shielding under any circumstances.
Natural containment: Ground and earth act as natural shielding. Voidrytes embedded in geological formations do not expose surface populations to Void Flux. Only exposed, refined, or energized crystals require protective handling.

Voidryte occur throughout Calderaas geology in concentrations sufficient to keep landmasses afloat. However, their richest and most valuable deposits originate from a rare geological phenomenon — the voidryte volcano.
Standard deposits: Found distributed throughout rock and soil at varying concentrations. Sufficient for landmass flotation. Not rich enough for large-scale industrial or military application without significant mining operations.
Voidryte volcanoes: Rare geological formations in which accumulated voidryte energy in the earth's heart builds to a critical threshold and erupts. Unlike conventional volcanic events, voidryte eruptions produce no lava — the event is a massive release of energy and crystalline debris driven entirely by accumulated field pressure.
Following an eruption, the site is permanently seeded with ever-growing crystal deposits, continuously fed by the crystal heart that remains beneath. Ancient eruption sites are therefore the most valuable land in Calderaas — their deposits do not deplete and continue to grow indefinitely.
Note: Whether a voidryte volcano can erupt more than once is an open question. Parked for future development.
Iron Cartridge Containment
All Voidryte used in practical applications is housed in iron cartridges. Iron is the optimal containment material available in Calderaas — the Iron Ceiling makes it the pinnacle of workable metals, and its density makes it an effective Void Flux shield.
The iron cartridge serves three simultaneous functions:
Contains the Voidryte crystal physically
Acts as the primary Void Flux shielding — the cartridge itself is the shield
Provides the interface point for VLE mechanical regulation systems
Cartridges can be pulled for realignment, repositioning, or replacement if damaged. Unlike Lighcryte cartridges, Voidryte cartridges do not deplete — they require calibration and maintenance, not replacement on a usage schedule.
Minimal casing in M.A.I.D. weapons — the same iron cartridge principle applies, but deliberately incomplete. Enough iron to handle and wield, not enough to fully contain the Void Flux field. This is what makes the weapons both functional and dangerous to the unconditioned.
applications
Applications
Landmass flotation: The primary and universal application. Voidryte concentrations within rock interact with the Precursor anti-gravity force to keep landmasses suspended at altitude. No technological intervention required — this is a natural geological process.
VLE ( Voidryte Levitation Engine ): The standard propulsion and lift technology for all airships and aerocrafts. Voidrytes within shielded VLE chambers are regulated by lighcryte input, converting their passive field emission into controlled, directed lift. See: VLE Engines.
M.A.I.D. void-enhanced weapons: Oversized weapons incorporating minimally shielded voidrytes. The partial field negates weapon weight, enabling combat capability impossible for unconditioned individuals. Requires years of childhood conditioning to wield safely. See: M.A.I.D.

Voidryte wealth is the foundational measure of power in Calderaas. Nations built on or near ancient volcanic sites hold disproportionate economic and military advantage. Cornelia's extraordinary wealth traces directly to a massive ancient eruption that permanently seeded its archipelago.
Mining and refining voidrytes is a specialized and prevalent industry. Protective handling equipment is standard across the trade — mechanics, engineers, and miners all work within established safety protocols. The technology is accessible enough that a local repair shop handles voidryte components routinely, yet specialized enough that expertise commands significant value.
